Clear and Colder
Hello, internet-land. If you were standing in the fields at the farm yesterday morning, you might have seen something like this: two beds of garlic, snug underground with thick mulch hay for a long winter. Some deer prints all over. Me, noticing the deer prints and grabbing stakes with bars of soap tied up top; pounding those stakes in all around my precious garlic in hopes that the deer won't trample it too badly if they smell soap. To deer, soap = humans. A small deterrent, I know. And then there was my neighbor's dog stealing bones out of the compost pile. And me, surveying the land and making a list of projects I need to finish before the snow flies.
This growing season may be over, but I'm already thinking about next year. I'll be attending several conferences this winter, which are always educational and fun, because I actually get to socialize and discuss current issues with other farmers. During the growing season, we barely have time to see each other! Until the conferences, I'll be busy making lists of what to plant in 2010, soil amendments to buy, tools to make or find. And much more. If you're not on my email list, please go to the homepage and sign up! I won't bombard you with junk email; just one message every Monday morning during the growing season to tell you what I'm harvesting that week. You email me back with you order, and then come to pick it up on Wednesday afternoon. Sweet!
While you can't purchase any Ten Speed Farm veggies until next Spring, there are many other farms in the area who will sell you their great produce all Winter long. Check out the Brattleboro Winter Farmers Market in the River Garden on Main Street every Saturday from 10-3! The first market is tomorrow morning! See you there.

The Longest Day
Happy Summer Solstice from Ten Speed Farm! I have to admit that it doesn't look much like summer up here today; rather, it's fairly soggy and drippy, with more of the same in the forecast. By mid-week, however, things should start to dry out and warm up. When you come to fetch veggies on Wednesday afternoon, the farm will look significantly better. (I hope.) On this week's harvest list: salad mix, spinach, arugula, beet greens, radishes, swiss chard, and pea shoots, which are back for one week only! Get 'em while you can.
In other news, there have been several sightings of little green tomatoes, as well as tiny peppers! Sugar snap peas are imminent, as are scallions. Watch this space! (or, better yet, come to the farm and see for yourself...)

Success!
The first-ever Ten Speed Farm weekly pickup day (June 10) was a success! Thanks to everyone who ordered veggies. A special thanks to Lissa, Anna, Ethan, Mary, Doug, and Mary Alice, who played tunes in the barn during pickup time. Very special thanks to Mr. Doug Creighton, who helped me harvest and weed all day, and then played tunes in the barn! Choices this week included salad mix, spinach, arugula, pea shoots, radishes, and eggs from Fair Winds Farm! Not bad for early June in Vermont. I'll post the harvest list for next week on Monday. Sign up on the email list if you haven't already, and I'll see you next Wednesday!
